Sunset Boulevard

This is a picture of the Toronto Production of Sunset Boulevard showing
the main room in Norma Desmond's house. This set takes up 2/3 of the stage
and weighs multiple tons. In a feat of technical theater magic, it is flown
off stage! It takes up so much flyspace that lighting instruments for other
scenes had to be mounted on the underside. It was often flown offstage with
actors still on the set piece. I am told it is able to move vertically as
well as up and down stage, and is moved though the use of a complex hydraulic
system. Someone I talked to about how it was done, called the show "Some-set
Boulevard" which I though was a good description! This is the magnitude
of show I want to be involved in someday.
